Why your system needs maintaining.
To maintain your septic and wastewater system at its optimum level of performance, a maintenance program must be set up to achieve this. A maintenance programme is not only good for your system; it is also a requirement of your local territorial authority and the system manufacturer.
Your septic system uses anaerobic and aerobic bacteria to process the wastewater. To allow these bacteria to thrive and carry out their intended function, a balance is required of what enters the system from your dwelling and the correct adjustments of the mechanical processes that occur. Within your system are a number of mechanical items which require regular checks, which if ignored can lead to costly repairs. All secondary processing systems either include an aeration device of some description (Blower unit or venturi air injector) or a media filtration bed. The systems will also include a submersible pump to deliver the treated effluent to a dripper line field. The mechanical processes are not 'set and forget'. A system which is not set up correctly will lead to an imbalanced system which will produce offensive odours and ultimately toxic water emitting from your dripper lines. This can lead to a sludge build up inside the pipe network. If not maintained, a failure of the irrigation field will occur making it necessary to replace your dripper lines. A well maintained system not only needs a maintenance programme but also on-going care and attention from the home owner. Careful attention to the use and avoidance of particular cleaning products must be made. This has a direct effect on the balance of bacteria in the system. |
Maintenance must include:
- All treatment beds to be maintained and kept tidy
- Regular inspections of the septic tank and dripper fields
- Septic tank emptying approx. every 5 years
- Effluent filters regularly cleaned
- Arkal dripper line filter cleaned every 3 months
- Aeration treatment systems serviced every 6 months
- Textile treatment systems service every 12 months
